The large fires
Fires big enough to be mapped from satellite (1,000 acres or more in the West), with the acres
that burned inside the county. "Burned" runs from the start date to the day the fire was declared contained;
in the high country that is often the autumn rains.

Small fires are shown as squares, not points. Most small fires start close to homes, roads
and campsites. Showing each one as a dot would point at someone's property or a quiet spot, so each is
counted in the 1 km square where it started. A square's causes are shown only when at least
3 fires started there.
Acres are each fire's full reported size. A fire that started in the county is counted
whole, even if part of it burned beyond the county line; the large-fires list gives acres inside the county.
Some causes aren't recorded.
Through 2024. These national records are compiled a year or more after each fire season.
